 Instagram Privacy Settings

Instagram provides several privacy options to help you control who can see your content, interact with your account, and access your personal information.

 1. Set Your Account to Private

By default, Instagram accounts are public, meaning anyone can see your posts and follow you. Setting your account to private ensures that only approved followers can see your posts and stories.

- How to Do It:

  1. Go to your profile and tap the three horizontal lines (menu) in the top right corner.

  2. Select Settings and privacy.

  3. Tap Account privacy under Who can see your content.

  4. Toggle on Private account.

 2. Manage Story Settings

Instagram stories can be shared with all your followers or specific people. You can also prevent certain users from seeing your stories.

- How to Do It:

  1. Go to Settings and privacy.

  2. Tap Story under Who can see your content.

  3. Choose who can view your stories:

     - Hide Story From: Select followers you want to block from seeing your story.

     - Close Friends: Create a list of people you want to share stories with privately.

 3. Limit Interactions with Unwanted Users

Instagram allows you to control who can comment on your posts or send you direct messages.

- How to Do It:

  1. In Settings and privacy, tap Messages under Who can message you.

  2. Choose who can message you directly (e.g., only followers or people you follow).

  3. In Comments, select Allow comments from and choose People you follow or Your followers to limit comments to known users.

 4. Control Tagged Photos

People can tag you in photos on Instagram, but you have control over whether those tags are visible on your profile.

  • How to Do It:

  1. Go to Settings and privacy > Tags.

  2. Toggle on Manually approve tags so you can review and approve photos before they appear on your profile.

 5. Limit Third-Party Data Sharing

Instagram collects data on your activity, but you can limit how much of this information is shared with third-party apps.

  • How to Do It:

  1. In Settings and privacy, go to Account center.

  2. Select Data permissions and review permissions for apps that are linked to your Instagram account. Adjust or remove access as needed.

6. Turn Off Activity Status

Instagram lets your followers see when you’re online or last active. You can turn off this feature to protect your privacy.

  • How to Do It:

    1. Go to Settings and privacy.

    2. Select Messages and calls.

    3. Toggle off Show activity status so that others can’t see when you’re online or when you were last active.

7. Manage Your Account Data

You can review and download a copy of all the data Instagram has on your account. It’s good to periodically check what information Instagram stores.

  • How to Do It:

    1. In Settings and privacy, go to Your information and permissions > Download your information.

    2. Request a download of your data, which includes your posts, profile info, comments, and more.

8. Remove Third-Party Apps Access

If you've linked third-party apps to your Instagram account, they may have access to your data. Review and remove unnecessary apps.

  • How to Do It:

    1. In Settings and privacy, go to Account center > Connected experiences.

    2. Select Accounts connected experiences and review/remove apps you no longer use.
