With the increasing availability of streaming platforms like Prime Video, Netflix, and Disney+ Hotstar, managing what your children watch has never been more important. Each platform offers parental control features to ensure that your children are exposed to age-appropriate content. This guide walks you through the steps to set up privacy and parental controls across these platforms for your family.

Prime Video: How to Set Up Parental Controls

Prime Video offers various features that allow parents to restrict access to certain types of content based on ratings, as well as restrict purchases.

Step 1: Set Up Prime Video Parental Controls

  1. Open Prime Video on your browser or app.

  2. Sign in to your Amazon account.

  3. Click on your profile icon, then go to Accounts & Settings.

  4. Select the Parental Controls tab.

  5. Here, you can:

    • Set Viewing Restrictions based on age ratings. You can set restrictions for content rated G, PG, PG-13, or R and block inappropriate content by requiring a PIN for access.

    • Create a PIN that will be required to change parental control settings or to make purchases.

    To enable:

    • Choose the restriction level (e.g., All ages, 7+, 13+, 18+).

    • Click Save.

Step 2: Restrict Purchases

  1. Under the Parental Controls tab, enable Purchase Restrictions.

  2. Any purchase of content will now require the Prime Video PIN, which you can set under Parental Controls.

Step 3: Monitor Profiles

Prime Video also allows parents to create different profiles for family members, including Kids profiles, which show only kid-friendly content:

  1. Go to Manage Profiles.

  2. Select Add New and create a Kids profile.

  3. Select the content restrictions based on the age group.

Netflix: How to Set Up Parental Controls

Netflix offers several parental control options, including individual profile restrictions and account-level controls that can limit the types of content accessible to your child.

Step 1: Create Kid Profiles

  1. Open Netflix and log in to your account.

  2. Go to Manage Profiles.

  3. Select Add Profile and choose For Kids.

  4. Set an age-based content restriction:

    • For Little Kids (TV-Y, TV-G): Preschool-friendly content.

    • For Older Kids and Below (TV-Y7, PG): Suitable for school-aged children.

    • For Teens and Below (TV-14): Teen-friendly, but excludes mature content.

Step 2: Set Maturity Restrictions on Existing Profiles

For existing profiles, you can modify the allowed content:

  1. Log into your Netflix account from a web browser.

  2. Go to Account and scroll to Profile & Parental Controls.

  3. Select the profile you want to restrict.

  4. Under Viewing Restrictions, choose the maturity rating for the content you want to allow (e.g., PG, TV-14).

  5. Enter your account password and click Save.

Step 3: Lock Profiles with a PIN

To prevent your child from accessing other profiles, you can lock specific profiles with a PIN:

  1. Go to Profile & Parental Controls.

  2. Select the profile you want to lock.

  3. Under Profile Lock, click Change.

  4. Enter your Netflix account password, then set a PIN.

  5. Save your settings.

Step 4: Restrict Specific Titles

Netflix also allows you to block specific titles:

  1. Under Viewing Restrictions for each profile, scroll to Title Restrictions.

  2. Enter the name of any show or movie you want to block for that profile.

  3. Save your settings.

Step 5: Monitor Viewing Activity

You can regularly check the viewing history of each profile:

  1. Go to Profile & Parental Controls in Account Settings.

  2. Select a profile, then click Viewing Activity to see what has been watched.

Disney+ Hotstar: How to Set Up Parental Controls

Disney+ Hotstar offers parental controls to restrict content based on age ratings, ensuring a family-friendly experience.

Step 1: Set Up Kids Mode

Disney+ Hotstar has a dedicated Kids Mode that provides a safe space for children to watch content:

  1. Open the Disney+ Hotstar app or go to the website.

  2. Sign in to your account.

  3. Go to Settings in your profile.

  4. Toggle on Kids Mode.

    • This mode automatically filters content to show only kid-friendly programming (Rated G or PG).

    • The interface changes to a kid-friendly design, showing only characters and content meant for children.

Step 2: Set Content Rating Restrictions

To control access to mature content:

  1. From Settings, select the profile you want to manage.

  2. Scroll to Content Restrictions.

  3. Choose the appropriate age setting: G, PG, 12+, 16+, or 18+.

  4. Save your changes, and the profile will only display content suitable for the chosen age group.

Step 3: Set Profile PINs

You can secure adult profiles with a PIN to ensure your child doesn’t access inappropriate content:

  1. Under Profile Settings, select Profile Lock.

  2. Enable the Profile PIN feature.

  3. Set a 4-digit PIN, and click Save.

    • This ensures that access to certain profiles requires PIN authentication.

Step 4: Monitor Viewing History

Disney+ Hotstar does not currently provide a built-in viewing history monitoring feature. However, parents can manually check what is being watched by reviewing the home screen’s Continue Watching section.

Additional Tips for Managing Parental Controls on Streaming Services

  • Update Your Settings Regularly: As your child grows, their content preferences and maturity level will change. Regularly review and update the parental controls to match their needs.

  • Use Third-Party Parental Control Tools: If you want more comprehensive control over what your children watch, consider using third-party apps like Bark, Qustodio, or Net Nanny to monitor and manage screen time and content restrictions across multiple devices and platforms.

  • Review Content Ratings: Before letting your child watch a new show or movie, check its content rating and reviews to ensure it's appropriate.

  • Discuss Online Safety: Have regular conversations with your children about what to do if they come across inappropriate content, and how to handle situations where they feel uncomfortable.

By implementing these parental controls on Prime Video, Netflix, and Disney+ Hotstar, you can create a safer and more secure streaming environment for your children, ensuring that they only access age-appropriate content.
